A Soldier's View of Pickett's Charge

revised 10/03/04

We've probably all seen the field of Pickett's Charge, either in person or through photographs from various vantage points.  These photo's by Jim Lamason provide a somewhat different perspective of the field - the soldier's eye view as they made their way from Seminary Ridge to their meeting with destiny.

1.  The view Pettigrews men would have seen as they stepped out of the woods and formed their lines of battle for the charge.   The "Copse of trees" is at the center of the photo on the horizon.

2.  Standing on the slight knoll in front of the Confederate line, looking back into the woods where Pickett's Division would have been resting before the Charge.  Note that the veiw is downhill toward the trees.

3.  Looking South. Just before step-off the Confederate battle line would have ended beyond the barn.  This is the area where Garnett's and Kemper's men would have begun their attack .

4.  Entering one of the several swales which crossed the path of the advancing soldiers.  Artillery fire would have been lighter here.  Notice that the bottom portions of the trees in the distance are no longer visible.  At this location, the Confederate soldiers would not have been visible to the Union troops on Cemetery Ridge.
GC-8.jpg (37690 bytes) 5.  Out of the swale now, the Round Tops are just visible in the distance in this view to the southeast.  At this point we're catching artillery fire even from there!
GC-9.jpg (57490 bytes) 6.  Out in the open now, the Copse of Trees is to our left, the red barn of the Codori Farm is visible to the right.
GC-10.jpg (72292 bytes) 7.  Closer to the Union line now, the Codori Farm buildings are now even closer to our right.
GC-11.jpg (61912 bytes) 8.  Entering another swale, Codori Farm still on our right.
GC-12.jpg (59241 bytes) 9.  In the swale now, note how the Union positions are no longer visible on the horizon.  this would be a time for re-forming and realigning.
GC-13.jpg (74218 bytes) 10.  Looking to our right (south) we see the Codori Farm Buildings clearly now, the Emmitsburg Road is just ahead.
GC-14.jpg (78885 bytes) 11.  Near the Codori Farm, one last chance to re-form.  Directly ahead is the "Rocky Outcropping".  Some report that this is as close as Pickett got to the Union Lines.
GC-15.jpg (73370 bytes) 12.  Looking slightly to the left from the same position as the previous photo, we see "The Copse of Trees" in the center of the photo, the edge of the Rocky Outcropping is on the right, the white buildings of the Bryan Farm are on the left.  Time for the troops to advance at the Double Quick!
GC-16.jpg (79884 bytes) 13.  Right Oblique, Double Quick!   We're almost there, clearly going uphill.
GC-18.jpg (73345 bytes) 14.  Looking off to our left (N-NW) this is where Pettigrew's men would have approached from.  Note the white Bryan Farm building on the right edge of the photo.
GC-19.jpg (76502 bytes) 15.  The dirt trail in the foreground is Confederate General Garnett's last known position.  Up the hill ahead of us is the stone wall which marks the Union Line.  "The Angle" is just to our left.  The monument with the soldier swing his rifle like a club is the 72nd Pa. Fire Zuaves.  General Meade's monument is to the left, hidden by the now razed "National Tower".
